This morning, we talked about money and how dirty dollar bills can get. You might have heard before that our money can have cocaine on it – that’s actually true. It’s also got fecal matter on it. Pretty gross, huh? There are numerous everyday items that are covered in harmful germs and could potentially make you sick. Check out other germ covered items below and some tips to help you stay healthy.

Mayo Clinic: The Dirtiest Things You Touch

According to Dr. Gregory Poland from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, most people unknowingly touch their faces between three to 30 times per hour. He points out that touching objects before scratching or rubbing the face is a common way people get sick.

Poland does agree that money can harbor germs, but says dollar bills are not highly contagious. Poland did highlight several everyday items that pose a higher risk and offered tips on preventing illness.

Dr. Poland mentioned that touch screens, tablets, and phones are notorious for harboring germs. In fact, WebMD says your phone could be up to 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat. Additionally, he labeled restaurant menus as “really bad” and doorknobs as “really, really bad” in terms of germ exposure.

His advice for everyone is to avoid touching your face especially your eyes, nose and mouth and to frequently wash your hands with soap or use hand sanitizer.

Our obsession with hand sanitizer reached its highest point in 2020 during the pandemic. It seems like fewer people are using it now, but you might want to find a bottle, especially if you’re going to a public place like a grocery store.
