Hand, foot and mouth disease is an infection that can be caused by numerous viruses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It results in sores inside the mouth, as well as a rash on the feet and hands. While the infection is usually harmless and goes away after seven to ten days, it can result in viral meningitis, polio-like paralysis or brain inflammation.
